Family: Euphorbiaceae

Coloured foliage shrubs prized throughout tropical and subtropical gardens of the world.

Colours tend to be intensified in full sun, although some cultivars perform better in protected sites. In low light, foliage may revert back to simple green tones.

Good garden soils with ample drainage is recommended and regular fertilising will enhance colour tones.

Crotons are known to withstand drought provided they are well established.

C. variegatum pictum (Croton) – multitude of colours and leave shape variations as a result of constant hybridising. Shrub to around 1-2 metres.

Known problems

Scale and mealy bugs are the most recorded problems.
